We chat about the heart - it’s beauty and blessings - the sustainer of our lives with its beating power.  In our lives we have experiences that are heartwarming and also experiences that are heartbreaking.  (Spoiler - I share a bit of both...it gets real, people!!!).  Heartbreak is difficult.  And it’s unpleasant.  Yet, we have the power to not only deal with it, survive it, and THRIVE after heartbreak.   Tune in for some tips on processing, rather than avoiding emotional distress, and why it’s beneficial to do so! With an open, nurtured heart we are empowered to move with intention towards our dreams and vision!

      • Avoid judging (labeling) your emotions as “bad” “wrong” or telling yourself “I should not be feeling this way”
      • Acknowledge when an emotional experience is uncomfortable
      • It is not necessarily the emotion that contributes to the distress, the pain, the feeling stuck or out of balance; it can also be the judgment we place that intensifies the pain, discomfort
    • Are you telling yourself stories?
      • Heart break?
      • Struggling to connect?
      • Stories you are starting to believe:
        • I’ll never find love
        • I’m not cut out for true love
        • I can’t make a relationship work
        • I’ll never get off this roller coaster

        • Attending to potential changes with transitional periods in life due to trauma, loss, life adjustments and circumstances 
        • “Compatibility can be the safety net when love dips”
  • Invitation:
    • Reflect on previous relationships and identify aspects that went well for you, aspects that did not go well
    • Consider current circumstances, where are you right now
    • Envision future relationship vision, desire, goals
  • Regardless of stage of relationship (partnered, married, single, dating, etc.), relationships take work and it is important to focus on healthy dating within your relationship context (e.g., dating your partner, spouse)

  • We continue the Series - Designing and Delivering the Life of Your Dreams - Body, Mind, Heart, Soul, and Spirit (Episode 9)

  • This episode begins with a reading of the book, Maybe by Kobi Yamada - “A Story about the Endless Potential in All of Us”; Illustrated by Gabriella Barouch
  • Nurturing the Mind includes appreciation for its connection to our experiences of body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit.
  • Signs: The Secret Language of the Universe by Laura Lynne Jackson
  • Autopilot mode occurs when we find ourselves performing actions in an automatic manner without having to be intentional (e.g., driving, riding a bike).  It can be helpful in times that require multitasking.  
  • Autopilot mode can pull us away from the present moment, focusing on the past, the future, or the mind wandering to a dream/daydream/creative/fantasy state.  
  • Autopilot also might contribute to missing opportunity for experiences of connection with others, experiences for joy or other pleasant experiences.
  • Think of a recent occasion that you experienced autopilot mode, focusing on the past
    • Strategy - Attend to the Breath as an anchor to the present moment
  • Think of an occasion that you experienced autopilot mode, focusing on the future
    • Strategy - 54321 Mindfulness/Grounding

      • Identify: 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can touch, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste
      • You can mix the order of senses and replace any sense with another, as it applies to your circumstance or situation 
  • It is most helpful to attend to your experience with curiosity and a sense of awareness, rather than judgment
    • Mind wandering (to the past, future, fantasy, etc.) is not inherently “bad or good”
  • The experience of mind wandering can also be protective - offering conscious disconnect from the present moment in times of stress, discomfort, danger, trauma
    • Excessive reliance on mind wandering to avoid unpleasant or uncomfortable experiences, over time can contribute to the development of unhealthy or maladaptive patterns.
    • In the spirit of increasing awareness, we can also promote healthy balance and nurturing attention to the aspects of mind focus and mind wandering.
  • Tune into your mind - the beauty, complexity, and the unique aspects of your mind with curiosity, intentionality, and awareness.

When my eye started twitching in the middle of my work day, I knew my body was sending me a message loud and clear!!  Slow down.  Pause, and take a break.  You need to rest.  You have Zoom fatigue!!  In a year where we have seen an astronomical increase in the use of video-conference for communicating - in work, for school, with friends and family - we are also recognizing the reminder to balance! And, we are certainly grateful for the positive aspects of technology in allowing us to connect virtually when physical connection has been limited. In this episode, I discuss signs of fatigue, especially those connected to the increased use of screen-based technology for communication and social connection.  I also outline some helpful tips for inviting balance and focusing on the importance of recharging your battery - body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit.

“Recharging your battery: Tips to address Zoom fatigue” - Episode 7 Notes:

 

  • Use of Video-conferencing has increased exponentially over the previous year during the COVID-19 Pandemic and subsequent requirements for physical distancing in order to protect, promote, and maintain the health and safety of our people and communities.
  • Benefits of video-conferencing platforms, like Zoom, are numerous.  
  • We have also experienced adverse effects, potentially connected to the shift from in-person social contact to technology driven social connection.
  • “Zoom Fatigue” is a common term that represents symptoms of fatigue as a result of increased use of technology (i.e., video-conference) for communication.
  • Fatigue - defined -Merriam-Webster
    •  weariness or exhaustion from labor, exertion, stress
    • Temporary loss of power to respond that is induced in a sensory receptor
    • A state or attitude of indifference or apathy brought on by overexposure (as to a repeated series of similar events or appeals)
    • The tendency of a material to break under repeated stress [metal]
  • Stress is a common result of significant life changes, and stress manifests in our thoughts, emotions, actions, relationships.
  • It is beneficial to proactively manage stress by eliminating unnecessary stress and also recognizing the inevitability of stressful life circumstances.  And then we employ coping strategies to maintain a sense of balance.
  • Setting limits and boundaries that promote health, wellness, self-care activities, leisure, fun, and joy can be helpful.
  • “Nonverbal Overload: A Theoretical Argument for the Causes of Zoom Fatigue” by Jeremy N. Bailenson outlines the positive aspects of Zoom and other video-conference modalities.  It also identifies possible causes for “Zoom fatigue” based on previous research and theory:  Excessive amounts of close up eye-gaze; Cognitive load; Increased self evaluation; and Constraints on physical mobility.
  • Helpful tips for preventing and/or managing Zoom fatigue:
    • Set realistic boundaries for technology use by limiting time spent engaged in unnecessary “face to screen” time
    • Position your device at a comfortable and realistic distance from your body
    • Explore screen settings for brightness/tone
    • Explore comfort with wearing blue light glasses or a protective screen/filter on your device
    • Increase your fun time away from your device (i.e., play Monopoly!; Have a dance party in your living room!; etc.).
    • Enlist support from family and friends to help you stay accountable.
    • Rest! 
    • Recharge your battery with leisure activity, time alone, time with loved ones.

Let’s talk about Stress!  We all experience it.  We don’t love it.  Stress is uncomfortable and can be dangerous when levels become too high, when life becomes overwhelming.  Dr. Lyz explains the relationship between stress and performance with attention to the reciprocal effects of distress and aspects of the body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit.  Dr. Lyz reviews the benefits of maintaining stress at a low to moderate range and shares six strategies for avoiding unnecessary stress, managing unavoidable stress, and designing a healthy, proactive approach to living well.  

 

Riding the Rainbow to manage stress illustrates the relationship between stress and performance outlined in the Yerkes-Dodson Law.  Optimal performance occurs when stress levels are maintained at a moderate level.  Low levels of stress are correlated with low performance - think of when you are not invested in a particular outcome or when you are disconnected from authentic stress awareness.  High levels of stress are correlated with low performance - for example when you feel overwhelmed, anxious and life feels out of control.  When you can manage stress, prevent it from becoming too high, and maintain stress at a low to moderate level, performance is optimized.

 

Six Strategies for Managing Stress:

 

  1. Avoid stress when you can.
  2. Recognize stress when it’s unavoidable.
  3. Take a curious approach to stress and increase your awareness of the impacts of stress - body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit.
  4. Be proactive.
  5. Cultivate resilience.
  6. Prioritize health and wellness.

Quiet your mind, calm your body and get in touch with your dreams and desires.  Envision and welcome sensory and intuitive experiences that tap into your creative flow.

Create goals based on your vision.  Be intentional with planning the steps to achieve your goals. Decide what resources you have already and what resources you need.

Deliver - Align, Evaluate, Celebrate

Deliver:  Align yourself with your vision - body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit. Be intentional in choosing actions, relationships, experiences that flow with your specific, short term goals and with your long-term vision.

Envision yourself having achieved that which you desire- past, present, future. Evaluate and Celebrate!! Check in with yourself regularly.  Redesign your goals as needed and continue to engage in the fluid process.
