I am honored and excited to share with you one of my most special days on my journey of designing and delivering the life of my dreams - it’s our one year anniversary!!!  On October 23, 2020, I celebrated with family, friends, community members, and elected officials at the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of Visionistas By Design Wellness Boutique.  I was and am so overwhelmed with joy and gratitude.  Reflecting upon the experience is powerful for me.  Looking around at all of my people was an incredibly emotional experience for me… so much joy and love and gratitude.   I am blessed to have a strong system of support, and I know that their smiles, and all their help and love, adds to my energy and passion to do what I love.  Over ten years ago, I wrote in my journal, “I am excited to some day ... help people accomplish their dreams and vision”.  And here we are today!!  My vision is to empower you to nurture yourself - body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit - by being proactive in building personal, family, and cultural health and wellness.  Proactive health includes putting good things into our bodies, moving our bodies regularly, getting adequate sleep, building strong connections, and nurturing relationships.  Being healthy also includes seeking support and treatment.  We are excited to be a part of your vision journey!!

    • Advocating for mental hygiene recommendations that promote mental well-being- similar to recommendations related to dental hygiene, sleep hygiene, physical activity
    • From the Canadian Mental Health Association “Mental health is key to our well-being.  We can’t be truly healthy without it.  It involves how we feel, think, act, and interact with the world around us” (p. 10) 
    • Most recommendations for promoting mental health include:
      • Physical activity
      • Good sleep hygiene
      • Balanced diet
      • Maintaining healthy social relationships
    • Targets common brain activities that have been associated with mental health illness and symptoms of mental health symptoms and can be detrimental when excessive:
      • Mind Wandering (MW) - when it is excessive, distressing, and/or disconnects one from moments of potential joy/connection
      • Rumination - “a process of uncontrolled recursive negative thinking that is primarily self-focused” (p. 10)
      • Self-referential processing within the Default Mode Network (DMN)
    • “Neuroscience has laid out a general model that the more an individual thinks excessively in a self-focused manner via unaware MW and rumination, the more one is prone to a decrease in well-being, in turn, increasing the susceptibility to mental health issues and illness.  Mental hygiene advocates that these underlying modifiable cognitive patterns require daily attention to minimize their frequency and produce the cognitive conditions conducive to well-being” (p. 11)
    • Mental Training Activities Recommended for increasing your mental well-being:
      • Meditation, Positive Psychological Interventions, Self-Directed CBT, Prayer, and Nature Exposure
      • These practices are positively associated with mental well-being.
      • Criteria for inclusion:
        • Significant evidence-based support
        • Robust safety profile
        • Potential Cross-cultural application
        • Scalability for equitable access
      • Meditation
        • Example - Mindfulness meditation is a practice that involves focusing attention on the present moment experiences in a non-judgmental manner
      • Positive Psychological Interventions (PPIs)
        • “Intentional cognitive activities that help cultivate positive feelings, positive behaviors, and positive cognitions” (p. 13)
        • Examples -  journaling about positive experiences, expressing gratitude, positive rehearsal, affirmations
      • Self-Directed Cognitive Behavioral Theory/Therapy (CBT) exercises
        • Identifying thoughts, emotions, behaviors/actions, the connections between them
        • Examples - keeping a thought record, examining and identifying emotions/behaviors that result from certain thoughts, increasing knowledge of your thought content and processes, etc.
      • Pro-social Prayer
        • Encouragement to explore your spiritual beliefs
        • Regular practice of prayer is correlated with increased mental well-being
      • Nature Exposure
        • Examples - take a walk in a natural setting, look up at the sky!, put your feet in the sand at the beach or on the grass, etc.

  • Dr. Maggie Landes and I have a shared passion for helping women live with confidence, balance, and joy.  We met through our membership in the Unstuck Entrepreneur Coaching Community with Shawn Mynar.

Bio for our guest, Dr. Maggie Landes:

  • Maggie Landes is a board-certified physician, public health nutritionist, and anti-diet wellness expert. She created her signature getEATfluenced® coaching program to help women who are exasperated with chronic dieting, be able to fix their food overwhelm and live a full and unrestricted life pursuing their personal passions and attain optimal health without the distraction of rigid eating behavior.  She is also the creator and host of “The Eatfluencer Podcast” where she and her guests dig into the mindset work required to construct a healthy, complete, and high-quality life unlimited by the oppression of diet culture.
  • Maggie has been a physician for over 20 years and also earned her Master’s Degree in Public Health Nutrition. She currently works in the anti-diet wellness space as a diet culture disruptor, speaker, and educator.  Maggie provides group coaching to help women disconnect from the pressure to “micromanage” body weight and navigate health outside of the lens of diet culture and weight loss.
  •  “Diet culture” - systematic beliefs in our country:
    • Weight and health are the same thing.
    • Smaller is better; everyone should be pursuing smallness.
    • Adult women have a responsibility to shrink themselves physically and/or maintain that  “shrunken” version.
    • Medical industry is influenced by and arranged around diet culture.
  • “Forced Pause” - Maggie was diagnosed with cancer and spent time during her treatment and recovery to learn more about health and wellness with a focus on nutrition.  She learned that although science evolves,  “Nutrition” guidelines have not.
  • People recognize that diets don’t work. Maggie helps women find the alternative to think about food and approach food - shop and cook and relate to your body without dieting.  She helps women replace the diet structure with new thinking patterns and behaviors to live confidently and well.

    • With her clients, Maggie explores - Why do you want to lose weight?
    • And clients identify the following goals with the belief that weight loss is the only way to get there:
      • “I will be more confident”

      • “I can participate in fun activities”
      • “I want to decrease joint pain”
    • Maggie encourages women to pursue those goals on the list and “leave the scale out of it.”
